So Democrats have been in charge of Delaware County’s government since Monday. How’s it going?

One of the first tell-tale signs that something was different showed up on Facebook when the Tuesday morning Delaware County Council meeting was live streamed, writes Laura Benshoff for WHYY.org.

“We’ve made history in a couple of ways today. But one of them is, this is the first county council meeting in Delaware County history to be live fed on Facebook,” said Chairman Brian Zidek.

Going forward, meeting recordings will also be distributed on YouTube.

Meeting schedules are being changed so more people can attend. Meetings will take place the first and third week of each month. Public legislation meetings will take place in the evenings.  For meeting times and dates, click here.

Council members will have set public office hours to give the public and county employees a chance to meet with them and ask questions. Click here for office hours.

The County Council also appointed member Kevin Madden to the Jail Oversight Board, a body created in October 2019 to replace the County Board of Prison Inspectors.

The goal is to increase county government transparency, provide greater oversight of the privately-controlled county jail and ban political patronage.

Delaware County is the only place in the state where a private prison company, the GEO Group, operates the local jail.
