A fire siren at Garrettford Fire House in Drexel Hill is the subject of two petitions, one to turn it off, one to leave it alone, reports Beccah Hendrickson for 6abc.com.
The siren has been in use for decades to alert firefighters to get to the firehouse. It’s also a warning for cars to clear the street for fire engines.
Youdt Tsegal feels with the advent of cell phones, firefighters have others way to communicate with each other. She’s collecting signatures to have the siren turned off.
Other neighbors agree it’s annoying but necessary.
“It’s what protects everyone. Especially when they’re coming in so you know, wait, stop they’re coming out of the firehouse,” said Jenna Borelli who’s lived in the neighborhood for 18 years.
On Election Day, the fire company had a sign up asking people to not sign the petition. Now there’s a counter-petition to keep the siren.
Mayor Tom Micozzie signed an ordinance recently allowing the siren and said it’s up to council to change the ordinance and prohibit the siren.
Mayor-Elect Barbarann Keffer said she wants to talk with the Garrettford fire chief before deciding one way or the other.
