The loving memory of a 17-year-old has brought students from West Chester and Chester together, writes Beill Rettew for the Daily Times.

Henderson High School student volunteers have developed relationships with hundreds of Chester youth, offering tutoring and swimming lessons to pick-up games and arts and crafts.

Andrew Hicks had started the tradition 10 years ago, joining his church group in sharing activities with the Chester kids.

“Mom, it’s not right that their schools are in disrepair,” Andrew told his mom, Karen Hicks. “Why is it that we live less than 20 miles away and we have a beautiful school and theirs is falling apart? We have to do something.”

He passed away on July, 19, 2010 during a family vacation. A Foundation was established allowing  Henderson students to continue his tradition.

There’s a fall carnival; open bowl; a toy store at Christmas; back to school backpacks; learn to skate and more, including camping for 100 Chester campers who experience hiking, canoeing, zip-lining.

“Without Chester County’s support or Henderson High School volunteers the entire program falls apart,” Karen Hicks said. “West Chester is really lovin’ on the city of Chester.”
