There aren’t many professions in which the employees are trying to work themselves out of a job.

In fact, behavioral healthcare may be the only one.

“We don’t want you to need us anymore,” said Katie Alvayero of Child Guidance Resource Centers. “We want you to learn the tools that are going to help you be successful long term.”

CGRC, a Havertown-based nonprofit with additional locations in Coatesville and Philadelphia, provides high-quality, evidence-informed behavioral health and educational services. It inspires hope, empowers, and contributes to the well-being of children, adolescents, and families with behavioral challenges, developmental disabilities, or residential needs. Ultimately, the goal is to help them enjoy happier outcomes.

“There’s a lot more to be concerned about with kids now than there were years ago,” said Dr. Andrew Kind-Rubin, Chief Clinical Officer. “The world is not always a safe and predictable place.”

Thus, the need for CGRC.

Incorporated in 1956, the organization is committed to creating and sustaining healthy, secure communities through highly qualified clinical services. Its work advocates for and maintains the health and well-being of the clients its serves.

“We all come together and really look at the behavior that we need to target and what are the interventions that we need to put into place,” said Grace Weinlein, CGRC’s Director of Specialized Services. “(Children) are all here for certain reasons, but when they’re here, they’re all on the same playing field.”

CGRC aims to create a safe environment in which children are more open to learning positive, pro-social behaviors.

“Mental health is critical,” said Colleen McNichol, CGRC’s CEO. “The community cannot prosper, we cannot thrive unless we’re paying attention to children’s mental health needs, families’ mental health needs.

“And we’re doing it. We’re helping children become contributing, productive adults and making better communities.”
