After nearly being forced to close over an unpaid property bill, the Nile Swim Club in Yeadon is on its way to a full recovery, writes Michael D’Onofrio for The Philadelphia Tribune.

The historic swim club is expecting to get out of the red over the coming months.

“People are excited. They’ve really come through,” said Christopher Sample, president of the club’s board.

According to Sample, the club has already paid off its back taxes to Yeadon Borough and the county, but still owes an estimated $90,000 to the William Penn School District.

Having opened in 1959, Nile Swim Club was the first swim club owned and operated by an African-American in the country.

It was facing a delinquent tax sale by the Delaware County Tax Claim Bureau in September for $270,000 in back taxes. However, the club’s board renegotiated the debt, reduced the penalties and interest, and made a payment plan.
