A group of Widener University freshmen recently visited Comcast’s headquarters to get an inside look at the company they’ve been studying all semester in Dr. Donna McCloskey’s Management 100 course, according to a report from the university.

The course, designed to introduce first-year students to business fundamentals, has embedded the telecommunications and entertainment giant into its curriculum.

The 32 students, who excitedly snapped selfies from the 43rd-floor observation deck of the Comcast Center in Philadelphia, connected with Widener alumni who occupy a number of top company posts.

The course used Comcast as a real-world case study. Company execs visit campus every other week to speak to the students about their roles, the evolution of their careers, and to share advice.

“In class, I can get the concept, and then the speaker applies what we’ve learned to what they do at a Fortune 50 company,” said Helena Ramos, a marketing major. “It brings it into perspective.”

Christian Nascimento, a 1997 Widener graduate who serves as executive director in product management for Comcast, helped to tailor the course’s curriculum.

“I had a really great experience at Widener,” he said. “I learned a lot and was well prepared for the business world.”
