Two Delaware County Educators Recruited by State’s Superintendent Academy
Southeast Delco School District superintendent Stephen Butz and Delaware County Intermediate Unit executive director Maria Edelberg have been recruited by the Superintendent Academy, writes Kevin Tustin for the Delaware County News Network.
The academy was created by the Pennsylvania Department of Education to bring together superintendents and charter school leaders from across the state. They participate in two years of professional development in order to improve educational environments affected by poor socioeconomic conditions.
“Poverty creates conditions for learning that all school leaders must be cognizant of,” said Pedro Rivera, the state’s Secretary of Education.
He said that, in addition to ensuring all students receive quality instruction, school leaders often have to respond to ancillary needs, such as access to food and mental health resources.
The program began Nov. 8. Over the next two years, superintendents and charter school leaders will meet in regional cohorts and online communities. Two-day colloquiums will also be hosted twice in Harrisburg.
