The Interboro School District welcomed Pennsylvania Secretary of Education Pedro Rivera for a visit earlier this week, writes Kevin Tustin for the Delaware County News Network.

The commonwealth’s top educator touted the state-wide successes of early-child education during his tour of the schools. At each stop, he spoke with staff and school board directors as part of the Schools That Teach initiative.

Rivera reported that during his first term as education secretary – and in conjunction with Gov. Tom Wolf – the state has created more than 10,000 new pre-kindergarten education or Head Start program slots.

“Research shows that early education is a proven investment,” said Rivera.

The pre-kindergarten program in Interboro was brought to the district thanks to a five-year Pre-K Counts grant worth $289,000 annually.

Rivera also discussed state funding issues for basic education, which is now at a record high of more than $9 billion for 2018-19, but that still only covers around 35 percent of overall costs. Rivera said it would be good to get more funds for basic education, which was applauded by Interboro Superintendent Bernadette Reiley.

“It was nice to hear the secretary say they want to increase the basic-education funding,” said Reiley.
