Villanova University aims to expand on its success on campus by becoming a better neighbor to its surrounding communities, writes Erin McCarthy for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The university has begun several new initiatives, including the recent Villanova Dines Out! Restaurant Week. The event saw Villanova students dressed in Wildcats gear join residents for discounted meals and prix-fixe menus in area restaurants.

More than 40 participating eateries from Wayne to Berwyn took part in the event. University officials hope this will help bridge the gap between residents and students.

“It’s definitely a positive thing for the area,” said Christopher Todd, president of the Wayne Business Association and owner of Christopher’s restaurant.

But Restaurant Week is just one of several initiatives.

Top administrators at Villanova recently hired Laura Wagoner to fill a new position, assistant director of government and community relations.

Along with Chris Kovolski, assistant vice president for government relations and external affairs, Wagoner has helped facilitate a number of events, including a back-to-school barbecue. There, students were reminded that they live in a residential area with people of all ages.
