Glen Mills-based Axalta recently unveiled the world’s largest coatings research and development facility at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, writes Tudor Scolca for Commercial Property Executive.

Construction of the two-story building, which cost $70 million, began three years ago. Liberty Property Trust and Synterra Partners are the developers and co-owners.

Axalta’s Global Innovation Center will be the primary hub for its global research, product development, and technology initiatives. The 175,000-square-foot facility is expected to create more than 200 science and engineering jobs.

With that in mind, Axalta has partnered with Serviam Girls Academy in Delaware and other institutions to promote STEM education through a number of programs that honor STEM educators and students in Greater Philadelphia and beyond.

The inauguration of the new Axalta campus included a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney, Councilman Kenyatta Johnson, and other dignitaries.
