Earnie Stewart, the Philadelphia Union’s former sporting director and now the general manager of the U.S. men’s national team, has undoubtedly left the Chester-based franchise in better shape than he found it, but unfinished business remains, writes Jonathan Tannenwald for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

During his two-and-a-half-year tenure with the Union, Stewart oversaw major increases in investment in the team’s front office and training facility and helped build YSC Sports, the youth soccer facility in Wayne, into one of Major League Soccer’s best.

YSC is the Official Youth Development Training Center of the Union.

It was no secret that Stewart had ambitions to work for the men’s national team. However, he feels his work with the Union was left incomplete.

“Building for the future is not something that happens in two and a half years. That takes a lot more time than it’s been,” Stewart said. “I wanted to be here for a longer time, because you can’t just build in two and a half years. You can build, but you’re not going to get the fruits from what you build.”

There is also the mutual hope that Stewart will see some of his Union players in his new job. His goal here was to develop players of that caliber.
