The Western Golf Association Caddie Academy started a new chapter this summer in the Philadelphia area called Eastern Caddie Academy, writes Donald Hunt for The Philadelphia Tribune.

This is the first time that local students have a chance to learn caddying at local country clubs like Newtown Square’s Aronimink Golf Club, the site of the 2018 BMW Championship.

The Western Golf Association Caddie Academy gives high school students the opportunity to learn all the advantages of being a golf caddie. More than 90 percent of participants are minority students who come from underserved communities.

“The program we started certainly introduced more girls to the program,” said Mike Maher, the WGA’s Director of Education who oversees the Caddie Academy. “Because of the success of the Caddie Academy, we’ve had a need to begin a boys program.”

Students who complete the entire three-year program are eligible to receive the Evans Scholarship. This gives them full tuition for four years and a housing grant to a top college or university.

This year, Alzberta Nei and Brooklyn Gabriel, two students from Cristo Rey High School in North Philadelphia, successfully completed the program and will use their scholarships to attend Penn State.
