Penn State Brandywine Professor Discusses His 45 Years on Campus

Stephen Cimbala, a distinguished professor of political science at Penn State Brandywine, believes that despite the school’s growth throughout the last 45 years, it has maintained a spirit of closeness, writes Haleigh Swansen for Penn State News.

“There is a genuine sense of community,” he said.

Cimbala, who studied at Penn State’s University Park, did not plan on becoming a lifelong educator.

“I was going to be a sportswriter or a news journalist,” he said.

“(In 1973, Penn State Brandywine) was looking for someone to work in academic administration,” Cimbala said.

Things have changed since then, and Cimbala’s favorite example of such is the evolution of technology.

“I still remember the day that our chancellor, Ed Tomezsko, walked into my office and took away my typewriter,” he said. “Today, my students can unlock their cars and start them from an app. It’s uncanny.”
