The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Media is celebrating its 150th anniversary, writes Peg DeGrassa for the Delaware County News Network.

Its year-long series of special events will culminate on the Feast Day of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Sept. 8, with a special anniversary Mass, celebrated by Archbishop Charles Chaput and followed by a celebratory dinner at the Drexelbrook Catering and Special Event Center.

“From its founding in 1868, the mission of our parish has remained the same: to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ, minister to the poor and sick, educate in ways of faith, and celebrate the sacraments,” said the Rev. Edward Bell, now serving his 15th year as pastor of the parish.

Currently the spiritual home to about 5,200 parishioners from 1,500 families, Nativity BVM Parish, as it’s colloquially called, is situated in the heart of Media Borough at 30 East Franklin Street.

The long history of the parish, as well as a selection of photographs, were compiled into a high-quality keepsake book that will be available to all families in the parish.

“This has been a fantastic year so far, celebrating 150 years of God’s goodness,” Rev. Bell said. “As a parish, we look forward to continue being ‘the hands of Christ’ and to further develop and grow in our Catholic faith.”
