Retired professional boxer Bernard Hopkins spoke to Glen Mills students as part of the school’s Character Leadership Development Program, writes Kevin Tustin for the Garnet Valley Press.

Hopkins, a former student at the school, spoke to hundreds of students who face challenges similar to the ones he did years ago.

Despite his rocky life as a teenager and a stint at Graterford Prison, Hopkins managed to become one of the most accomplished boxers in the sport’s history.

Before his talk, students watched a short video of his career. Hopkins then took to the stage to encourage the students to find their talent and not let their time at Glen Mills define their future.

At the end of his talk, he emphasized the importance of the Glen Mills program.

“This is a program I didn’t complete, but boy when I was sitting at Graterford state penitentiary getting certification, I wanted to come back here so bad,” said Hopkins.
