Following a two-year restoration project that cost $4 million, Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square is ready to challenge professional golfers again, writes John George for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The club has already welcomed the game’s best players twice this decade for the AT&T National in 2010 and 2011. Now, some of the same players will be taking part in the upcoming BMW Championship, but will experience a different course than before.

Aronimink has been returned as close as possible to the vision of famed golf course architect Donald Ross, who originally built the course in the late 1920s.

Gil Hanse, the Malvern-based golf course architect who designed the 2016 Olympic Golf Course in Rio de Janeiro, led the restoration project. During the process, he collaborated with John Gosselin, Aronimink’s superintendent, and his team.

Among the new challenges players can expect to encounter are a lot more bunkers, wider fairways, and larger greens.

“The restorations have brought back to life elements that were lost over time,” said Hanse.
