After three decades of planning and development, the mile-long Darby Creek Trail has officially opened in Drexel Hill, writes Kevin Tustin for the News of Delaware County.

County and Upper Darby officials commemorated the occasion by cutting a ribbon on the trail that goes along the creek from Kent Dog Park to Lower Swedish Cabin.

“This project finally makes Darby Creek something to be enjoyed by area residents instead of just cursed by rush-hour traffic,” said County Councilman John McBlain.

Upper Darby Mayor Tom Micozzie was a member of the township council in the late 1980s when the project originally began to develop.

“What we have here is a long time of getting together,” he said.

The opening of the trail marks the culmination of 30 years of planning, getting the required parcels of land, working with County Council, and securing finance. It completes phase one of the proposed route that should eventually run from Little Flower Manor in Darby Borough to Havertown and beyond.

“Within a short five years, we’ll be able to walk from here all the way to Havertown,” said Micozzie.
