Haverford College students in the Mentoring and Student Teaching Program help low-income students in middle and high school gain more experience in the sciences and writing, writes Shaquana Drury for the Haverford Clerk.

The MAST Program is both a job and a personal commitment for students. They spend their Saturday mornings teaching and building a connection with younger students who are often underrepresented in the sciences.

In the program, every Haverford tutor has a group of students he or she works with. This is usually two or three students participating in writing tutorials or science labs.

This year, the main focus has been expanding the science portion of the MAST Program to include new labs and a more challenging curriculum for students.

The program has been embraced by both tutors and their charges.

“I’ve done a lot of programs like this when I was younger, and I kind of wanted to give back like from what’s been given to me,” said Abiola Irvine, a psychology major and MAST tutor. “I feel able to connect with these students a lot more.”
