Newtown Square’s Petplan and the National Police Dog Foundation have provided grants that will fully fund pet insurance for 50 police dogs for a year.

Recipients of the grants were selected from a nationwide pool of applicants, including small-town police departments that do not have funding for their K-9 program. At present, the cost of the dogs’ care comes from donations or directly from their handlers’ pockets.

In their applications, many police departments expressed concern for K-9s’ occupational hazards, including exposure to illegal drugs and dangerous situations.

“Police dogs put their lives on the line every day for their communities, and they deserve access to the best possible medical care,” said Jim Reilly, President of the National Police Dog Foundation.

The K-9 Health Insurance Fund was created last year with a donation from Petplan. The company donates $50 to the fund for every new pet insurance policy that uses the campaign code “NPDF10″ when they are purchased. Further funds are raised by the National Police Dog Foundation along with contributions from public donors.
