Students at Penn State Brandywine recently took part in Canstruction, a competition to raise awareness and support for hunger in the local community, writes Haleigh Swansen for Penn State News.

Canstruction is an international competition that encourages design industry professionals, college students, and youth to design and build structures made from canned food items.

Eight teams entered the competition. The Canstruction entries were judged in several different categories.

At the end of the event, the canned items were donated to a local food bank, giving competitors a chance to combat food insecurity in their communities.

“We competed to raise awareness about how real the issue of food insecurity is in the Greater Philadelphia area. It affects many families,” said student Gabe Schaefer.

Once the structures were deconstructed, more than 2,000 cans of food were given to the Media Food Bank.
