Scores of Democrats in Delaware County recently gathered in Upper Darby High School’s auditorium to watch a debate among 13 of the 14 candidates on the primary ballot for the congressional seat of the newly formed Fifth District, writes Dave Davies for WHYY.

The debate was organized for the 800-plus members of the Delaware County Democratic Committee who would like to unite around a single candidate.

That task may now be more difficult as all the candidates came across as thoughtful and committed.

“When you have 14 people, and for the most part they, all sound very good and convincing, it’s hard,” said Florence McDonald, chair of the Yeadon Borough Democratic Party.

The number of good candidates reflects the shifting demographics and political currents in Delaware County. Once the underdogs, Democrats have now started winning township and countywide elections.

However, the number of good candidates, equally split between women and men, has put great responsibility on party leadership.

“A lot of our constituents are going to say, ‘Well, who should I vote for?’” said committeewoman Natalie Jordan, adding jokingly that “at minimum, we should at least be able to name them all.”
