The Penn State Brandywine men’s basketball team has won the Penn State University Athletic Conference title for the first time, writes Mike Jensen for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The lesser-known league is for Penn State campuses not in the NCAA. But the victory meant the world to the players.

Point guard Donte Winfield works at the Marriott Courtyard in Springfield several times a week, and sometimes has to miss practice.

But this was not a problem for the team’s new coach, Ben Kay. He knew he wanted Winfield to lead from the moment he took over. West Chester University transfer Terrence Brown and Upper Darby High School graduate James Fisher also played major roles in the team’s success.

The trio, who were not sure they would play this season, has found the road to the title incredibly special.

“We know a lot of guys get washed up,’’ said Winfield. “Guys we grew up with. I didn’t want to be that.”
