The Garnet Valley School District is continuing its commitment to creating innovative options for both students and staff with its blended learning program, writes Susan Serbin for the Delaware County News Network.

The program launched this year with a model course. Around two dozen students are participating in 11th grade U.S. History, instructed by veteran teacher Jennifer Lavender.

The new format includes in-class and out-of-class learning, in combination with online and independent learning.

“The model is the best of both worlds as far as classroom and out-of-classroom experience,” said Superintendent Marc Bertrando.

Bertrando said that blended learning provides students with more opportunities. For example, students who may be reticent about speaking in a classroom situation might feel at ease sharing their opinions on an online discussion board.

“The number of days in class flows with the course design,” said Bertrando. “It might be one or two days a week, or it could be multiple days in a row if students are making presentations.”
