A number of schools in the region, including the Chester Upland School District, are finding new ways to keep their arts programs going despite budgetary cuts, writes Melanie Burney for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Juan Baughn, the superintendent of Chester Upland School District, is an educator who believes in the importance of the arts in youth education. His plan is to prioritize the “Four A’s” – academics, athletics, arts, and activities – to help turn around the 3,200-student district.

Baughn officially became superintendent after working in the position in an interim capacity for six months. One of his first moves was to revive the band at Chester High and form a faculty and staff choir.

He also plans to offer theater and other activities over time.

“I’m finding a way to make it happen,” said Baughn, who plays the tuba. “I want our young people to have what they deserve. No matter where you live, you should have these things.”
