After a bit of research, officials in the Abington School District believe the donation sets a record for philanthropic gifts to a public high school.

The Abington School District has received what district officials believe is a record $25 million gift from alumnus Stephen A. Schwarzman, the chairman, CEO and co-founder of Blackstone, one of the world’s largest investment firms, writes Chris English for theintell.com

Schwarzman donated $25 million to his former high school @AbingtonSenior in a move to encourage other private donations to public schools, @Blackstone tweeted earlier today.

District officials said they believe the gift is the largest ever given to a public school district in the country. They said they researched the matter through The Chronicle of Philanthropy, which tracks donations to schools and educational causes, the story continues.

According to that organization’s website, the largest educational gift in the country’s history was the $128.5 million given to the private George School in Middletown in 2007 by alumna Barbara Dodd Anderson.
