Newtown Square’s Dunwoody Village is a recipient of a prestigious Excellence in Technology Award from McKnight’s Long-Term Care News, writes Elizabeth Leis Newman for the magazine for caregiving professionals.

The awards honor long-term care providers that excel through the use of technology.

“This year’s McKnight’s Tech Award winners are an indicator of some of the best work that providers can do when they put their collective minds together,” said McKnight’s Editorial Director John O’Connor.

Dunwoody Village was honored with the Gold Award in the Dignity category, thanks to its efforts in addressing the issue of incontinence and toilet program management.

The continuing care retirement community is using a smartphone app to forecast when residents need to use the restroom. The app then alerts certified nursing assistants to help the resident.

As a result, the app has not only been able to achieve a 71 percent drop in incontinence among participating residents, but also a 54 percent reduction in falls from residents struggling to reach the bathroom alone at night.

“Aides are proactively anticipating the needs of the residents, and customer service has improved,” said Brandon Jolly, Director of Health Services at Dunwoody.
