Former CIA agent Jack Devine recently visited his alma mater, Monsignor Bonner and Archbishop Prendergast, to talk about how attending a Catholic high school helped him in his career as a spy, writes Lou Baldwin for CatholicPhilly.com.

Devine, a 1958 Bonner graduate, worked as a teacher at the Drexel Hill school in the early 1960s, before being recruited by the CIA.

After numerous assignments, Devine became an associate director and acting director of operations. He retired from the government in 1999, and now does intelligence work in the private sector.

Some of the highlights of his career include directing assistance to Mujahideen fighters in Afghanistan during the Soviet occupation in the 1980s, and overseeing Pablo Escobar’s capture.

During his career, he was forced to make difficult, life-or-death decisions, but found strength from his years at the school.

“I can tell you Bonner allowed me to retain my sanity because I had a value system,” said Devine. “If you don’t, the capacity for corruption is huge.”
