Marple Newtown High School senior Lauren Holt is one of seven students chosen this year to receive the McCabe Scholarship, which annually provides a full tuition grant to Swarthmore College, writes Leslie Krowchenko for the Delaware County News Network.
The McCabe Scholarship was established 65 years ago by Thomas B. McCabe, the former chairman and CEO of Scott Paper. Candidates for the scholarship are chosen from admitted students with two of the seven grants available to individuals from Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery counties.
According to Jim Bock, vice president and dean of admissions, the scholarship for the 2017-2018 school year is $65,774. This will cover the tuition fee of $50,424 and other key expenses such as room and board.
The award puts an emphasis on ability, character, personality, and leadership, as well as service to school and community. Holt demonstrated all of these qualities, including serving as a National Honor Society board member and captain of the track and cross-country teams.
“I’m excited to be starting college,” said Holt. “It will be wonderful to be surrounded by such intelligent and passionate people for the next four years.”
