Change is coming to Swarthmore College’s campus following the launch of its $450 million capital campaign, writes Alison Burdo for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The planned development is part of the college’s ongoing drive to connect its science disciplines under one roof. The new building will be the home of the biology, engineering, and psychology departments, and will span close to 158,000 square feet.

“It will foster more collaborative research opportunities for faculty, and for faculty and students,” said Swarthmore College president Valerie Smith.

The new building will be on the current location of Papazian Hall, which will be demolished in June. Additionally, the renovation of the college’s Sproul Observatory is expected to start this summer.

The observatory will be transformed into the James Hormel and Michael Nguyen Intercultural Center at Sproul Hall. This will put the Intercultural Center, Interfaith Center, Religious and Spiritual Life Office, and the Office of International Student Services all under the same roof.

The $450 million capital campaign has further goals, including raising around $150 million for re-imagining the college’s campus and $200 million for building an inclusive community, along with strengthening Swarthmore’s social impact.
