Patrick Shanahan, an executive at Boeing, has been nominated by President Trump for Deputy Defense Secretary, writes Thomas Gibbons-Neff for The Washington Post.
Shanahan, the senior vice president of supply chain operations for Boeing, will serve as Defense Secretary Jim Mattis’s second-in-command if confirmed by the Senate. He will succeed Robert Work, who has agreed to stay in his position until the successful nomination of his replacement.
Shanahan’s recent experience at Boeing, which has a plant in Ridley Park, is primarily on the commercial side. However, he previously served as vice president and general manager of Boeing Missile Defense Systems, as well as its military rotorcraft division in Philadelphia.
Trump has recently had several meetings with Boeing executives. He is aiming to reduce the cost of the Air Force One replacement and gain leverage to do the same with Lockheed Martin’s F-35 program.
