Havertown’s Mary Killeen McCans, 17, has been recognized for her ongoing devotion to helping those in need by being named as a Distinguished Finalist for the 2017 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards for Pennsylvania.

The nationwide program honors young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism. In addition to crowning two top volunteers in Pennsylvania, the program judges recognized eight other finalists, including McCans, for their outstanding community service activities.

McCans, a senior at Cardinal O’Hara High School, spends 12 hours a week volunteering with the Narberth Ambulance service. She is also a CPR training advocate who has successfully organized a school training day, managing to reach more than 650 students. McCans has also spoken at the state capitol in support of implementing mandatory CPR training in schools.

McCans became an advocate for CPR training after she saw the procedure save a 10-day-old baby, and she now serves as an American Heart Association CPR in Schools advocate.
