John Magowan has spent four decades bringing a smile to residents of Delaware County by selling his soft pretzels outside local shopping centers, writes Peg DeGrassa for the Delaware County News Network.

The 67-year-old Woodlyn resident, affectionately known as the Pretzel Guy, never has trouble getting passersby to shell out a couple dollars for his product. He can be usually found outside the Ridley Sports Club in the MacDade Crossing Shopping Center, where “regulars” often stop to chat with him.

“I especially like the people and often get to know my customers,” said Magowan. “That’s one of the reasons that I do this job.”

Magowan, who was born with Cerebral Palsy, works every day except Sunday from 9 AM-2 PM, or until he sells out. If he sells out early, he calls his wife of 40 years, Debbie, to come pick him up.

Originally from Delaware County, Magowan studied Retail Sales and Business Management at Johnstown Trade School before acquiring a vendor’s license to sell pretzels.

“The Township of Ridley granted me a vendor’s license. I feel special here,” Magowan said. “When I’m gone, there won’t be another pretzel man. I’m it. They call me the ‘drive-thru pretzel guy’ because people can drive by and just pick up a bag. Some don’t even leave their car.”
