Wayne’s B Lab to Pull Conference from North Carolina Because of Bathroom Law
Wayne’s B Lab, a nonprofit that created and awards the B Corporation certification for for-profit organizations, will move its annual conference from North Carolina unless the state changes its law regarding public bathroom use, writes Jane M. Von Bergen of the Philadelphia Inquirer.
North Carolina law requires people to use public bathrooms based on the sex on their birth certificates rather than that which with they identify.
Founded by Jay Coen Gilbert, Bart Houlahan, and Andrew Kassoy, B Lab certifies companies as “B Corps.” It’s based on their meeting standards of transparency, accountability, sustainability, and performance, with an aim to create value for society, not just for traditional stakeholders such as the shareholders. The B stands for beneficial.
Gilbert and Houlahan were founders of the Philadelphia-based athletic shoe company, And 1, which they later sold.
The October events include a gathering of 1,700 B Corps chief executives as well as a conference for city economic developers, corporate supply chain managers, investors, and college business educators.
