The Delaware County Health Department is offering a free drive-thru flu vaccination clinic Tuesday, Oct. 1, 10 AM to 2 PM, at Tinicum Fire Department in the hopes of getting a jump on the flu season, writes Justin Udo for KYW Newsradio.

“We know that currently, we’re in the time of the flu season when there is a heightened response to contracting the flu and becoming very ill,” said Dr. Gifty Akomea Key, administrator of the department’s population health division.

Upper Darby hosted the first flu vaccination clinic of the season Sept. 19, a walk-up clinic at SEPTA’s 69th Street Transportation Center that emphasized the unhoused population.

The hope is a drive-thru clinic will reach people from different areas of Delaware County, while also being convenient for those just passing by who want a quick vaccination before continuing on their way.

Although it till feels a bit early to get a flu shot, now is actually the perfect time for it.

“It takes two weeks for the immunity to kick in,” said Ali Fequiere, a community health emergency preparedness planner, “so you want to get it two weeks before you’re really worrying about it.”
