Hundreds to Descend Upon Downingtown for 90-Year Tradition Involving Frog Legs
At St. Anthony’s Lodge & Swim Club in Downingtown, a 90-year tradition shines a spotlight on frog legs – sometimes up to 6,500 sets of them, writes J.F. Pirro for Main Line Today.
During the Aug. 1 dinner, 800 men will wash down thousands of deep-fried frog legs with plenty of beer. The $50 meal also includes salad, veal, chicken, Italian bread, and pepper and lemon to season the frog.
These popular frog leg dinners got a mention in Guinness World Records and often go as late as 2 AM.
“There are priests and a prayer, a rendition of ‘God Bless America,’ and a simultaneous toast where all in attendance shout out, ‘Salute,’” said local artist Adrian Martinez.
Most of the guests get their invitations handed down through generations by a committee known as the Amphibious Order of Frogs.
In addition to the 1,500 pounds of frog legs, the event also requires 1,300 pounds of chicken, 1,000 pounds of veal, and 120 pounds of Kennett Square mushrooms, along with 35 kegs of beer and two kegs of birch beer.
