Brookhaven Nonprofit Takes Music on the Road to Kids and Adults
It’s never too early or too late to learn to play a musical instrument.
That’s the philosophy and message behind “Keep Music Alive,” a husband-and-wife nonprofit founded in 2014 out of Brookhaven, writes Wakisha Bailey for CBS News Philadelphia.
“Our mission is to help more kids and adults reap all the educational, therapeutic, and social benefits of playing music,” said Vincent James, who runs the 10-year-old nonprofit with wife Joann Perdomenico.
The couple pack a minivan with more than 50 musical instruments, visiting schools, libraries, and festivals like Teach Music Week and a popular favorite, Kids Music Day.
A typical visit will bring out spring drums, ukuleles, and a melodic amphibian known as Freddy the Frog.
They are helped by kid ambassador Tucker Weiss, an 11-year-old singer-songwriter.
Jamming out and making beautiful music is only part of the nonprofit’s mission.
“It’s just a way you can connect with people, and it’s a way you can leave every bit of trouble that’s in your life behind, just focusing on that song,” Tucker said.
Pierdomenico said playing music is one of the few activities a child and an adult can do that uses both sides of the brain at the same time.
