A Year Later: Pilot Returns to Scene of DH Helicopter Crash

By

It was a year ago Wednesday, Jan. 11, that a  medical helicopter crash landed outside Drexel Hill United Methodist Church in Drexel Hill, reports 6abc.

And one year to the day, Pilot Danial Moore, along with the nurse and medic with him on that fateful journey, returned to the scene outside the church with their families, accompanied by Drexel Hill United Methodist Church Pastor Russell Atkinson.

“(I’m) Just thankful that we are here to come back a year later and celebrate,” Moore said.

It is a celebration of life, he said, adding he still isn’t sure how everyone on board survived.

“Twenty-six years of flying. A lot of luck. A whole lot of God. Not necessarily in that order,” he said.

The medical helicopter was en route to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, piloted by Moore, when it malfunctioned, forcing him to crash land the aircraft in the 600 block of Burmont Road near Bloomfield Avenue.

After striking the street, the aircraft slid onto the church property.

The event has become known as the “Miracle on Burmont Road” as Moore maneuvered the helicopter to the ground without hitting power lines, buildings, the church itself, or people.

Moore was seriously injured in the controlled crash. The flight paramedic, Kevin Chafee, and flight nurse Kris Lawson were also injured, but a 2-month-old patient on board was not hurt.

Chafee said they are grateful the baby was unhurt and that they are here to tell their story.

“Everybody came out of that. I mean Dan was the worst injured, and you know the rest of us were, well, we are just very thankful,” Chafee said.

Yesterday, the three men prayed at the crash site and signed a divot left on a nearby pole.

Moore has been on medical leave since the accident.

“I’m hoping to get back up here within the next month or so,” Moore said.

Chaffee said he is getting better.

“I am able to go back to work and, you know, look back on this day last year and say, you know what? It didn’t beat me. I’m getting back to work.”

The helicopter crash is still under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board. There is no official word on what caused the malfunction and crash.
