Penn State Brandywine in Media Hosts a Week of Events Honoring MLK Legacy
Penn State Brandywine in Media is hosting seven MLK programs, Jan 17 to 21 providing opportunities for service, education, and activism honoring the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.
The programs, part of the 27th Annual Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King Day of Service, will focus on the 2022 MLK theme, “Combating Racism and Building Community.”
The programs are a collaboration of the Penn State Brandywine’s Center for Ethics & Civic Engagement, Penn State Abington Student Engagement & Leadership, and Penn State World Campus Student Affairs.
Many of the events are open to the public.
Things kick off Monday, Jan. 17, with a day of service.
From 10 a.m. to noon in Rooms 114 to 117 of the Brandywine Student Union Building, Penn State Brandywine students, faculty, staff, and the public are invited to a morning of service to honor Dr. King’s life and legacy.
Student volunteers will lead a variety of family-friendly service projects, crafts and educational activities. This event caters to individuals of all ages
On Tuesday, Jan. 18, there will be a Penn State Brandywine-only event, “Living Room Conversation,” from noon to 1:25 p.m. in the Student Union Building, Rooms 114 to 117. There will be an exchange of ideas and experiences on combating racism. The event will use a model developed by dialogue experts to facilitate connections.
On Tuesday, Jan .18, 6:30 to 8 p.m., explore via Zoom the Social Change Wheel 2.0, a model from the University of Minnesota’s Campus Compact. The discussion will look at how you can be an agent for change. Click here to register.
On Wednesday, Jan. 19, there will be a Penn State Brandywine-only event, “MLK Trivia Kahoot” from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. in the Student Union Building Parsons Hall. Test your knowledge of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The top three winners will receive Amazon eGift cards valued at $50, $35 and $15.
On Thursday, Jan. 20, from 7 to 8 p.m., via Zoom or at the Student Union Building, Rooms 114 to 117, join the discussion, “Alumni in Action”. Filmmaker Jacob Mejias, a May ’21 Penn State graduate (CAS), will discuss directing his documentary about racial justice protests in Philly in the summer of 2020. Click here to register.
On Friday, Jan. 21, there will be a Penn State Brandywine-only event, “Student Hunger @ BW” from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. at the Main Building, Room 113. Learn about student hunger on campus and beyond from the student interns engaged in operating Brandywine’s Campus Food Pantry.
Finally, on Friday, Jan. 21, at 8 p.m., via Zoom or at the Student Union Building, Parsons Hall, there will be a screening of “I Am Not Your Negro,” a 2016 documentary expanding the work of James Baldwin on the peril America faces from institutionalized racism. Click here to register.
