When Swathmore opened the taps in 2017 to allow liquor licenses, Swarthmore bars and restaurants were quick to get in line, writes Anatole Shkla for the Swarthmore Phoenix.

The Board Table Tavern, Village Vine and the CO-OP all now serve alcohol.

The latest Swarthmore bar will be Ship Bottom Brewery, opening later in December on Park Avenue.

Company President Robert Zarko said Ship Bottom Brewery started small in 2012 in Wallingford but with the Swarthmore opening has expanded to four locations.

“This one would be more about the beer. How we produce it, how we make it, about just enjoying the beer and kind of a more eased-back and relaxed setting,” he said.

Ship Bottom Brewery is family-oriented and more relaxed than a typical bar, Zarko said.

“We have a lot of people that come with their kids and hang out at our locations … We don’t consider ourselves a typical bar.”

There will be a variety of beers and ciders available. Zarko recommends the brewery’s Surf Czech Pilsner and its Mexican Cerveza.

The new Swarthmore bar also has outdoor seating at the Theodosia Gardens adjoining the building.

The location is still under construction but the CO-OP carries the new bar’s brands.
