Robert Boyce of Wallingford realized after reading 100 fictional Western novels that “I can do better,” writes Peg DeGrassa for the Daily Times.

“I found that I wanted more action and more of everything compared to what I found in what I was reading,” Boyce said.

And so “Kettle of Tears,” his first novel, was born. It was published by Fulton Books this year.

The story revolves around hero Nathan Tallhelm who has to find his cousin, bushwhacked by the villainous Bertram Herzog.  Most of the action takes place in a mountainous part of Idaho.

Boyce, 73, has had the entire plot of the book in his head since 1987.

The 400-page book has lots of gunplay, two love stories, wild animal drama and “the most evil villains that readers can imagine.”

Now retired, Boyce has had a successful career as a custom cabinetmaker for 30 years. His father instilled in him his fondness for reading and writing.

He has used some of his spare time to recreate the topography of Ridley Creek in his front yard, working to turn it into a miniature landscape.
