Inspired by the fieldstone farmhouses in Provence, France, an unnamed local couple decided to build their own similar residence in Elverson, and the finished product is a true Chester County classic, writes Matt Freeman for County Lines Magazine.

To design the home, they chose architect John Milner, who is known for his expertise in historical preservation.

Milner designed the home so that it would have beautiful views from every vantage point.

He also ensured that the home reveals itself to visitors as they approach on the driveway. He achieved this by connecting the garage, guest house, and transitional terrace room with a curving wall.

The home itself has some authentic Provence details, including a pair of stone columns the architect got from a dealer in France.

The interior of the home embodies a subtle distinction in Provençal architecture, walking the line between the utilitarian rustic and the rural manor house that leans more on the sophisticated side.

However, this does not mean the home is overly formal. The aim was to make it inviting.

“We wanted something that was really open to flow,” said the owners.
