The art scene at Penn State Brandywine has blossomed in the last decade, in large part due to art professor Jon Manteau, writes Haleigh Swansen for Penn State News.

Manteau first came to Brandywine in 2010 as a part-time instructor who taught a studio-art class once a week. When a full-time opening in the arts department became available, he was offered the position.

He soon realized, however, that creating a culture would take time and effort, and he needed to start from scratch.

“We would have to start with simple, intro-level courses and grow from there,” Manteau said.

So he began implementing a five-year course plan to give the campus’s studio-art offerings time to grow and become more sophisticated. Within a few years, he met this goal with the support of Assistant Director of Academic Affairs Pat Hillen.

Now, Brandywine offers students a choice of seven to eight art courses each semester, including digital art and independent studies.

The art department also has an art studio in the Vairo Library and a space affectionately called “the Basement Gallery” that displays student art throughout the year.
