Many bakers were shocked to find that a number of Hershey’s Kisses shipped last month were missing their tips, thus ruining the popular holiday cookie topper, writes Christina Caron for The New York Times.

Instead of the signature slope forming a round, conical peak, the chocolates had a jagged edge. A Hershey spokesman quickly responded by saying the company is taking the issue very seriously.

“We make more than 70 million Kisses a day here in Hershey, Pa., and we want each of them looking as great as they taste,” said Hershey’s Jeff Beckman. He said that the company has an operations team “working to improve the appearance because it’s as important to us as it is to our fans.”

The problem was originally highlighted on The Wedding Cookie Table Community group on Facebook in early December by Debbie Sheetz of Greensburg, Pa. Soon bakers from other states were also saying they were finding the tips missing.

According to the company, it is unknown how many Kisses were affected. Thus far, only its solid chocolate made in Hershey had the defect. Filled kisses were unaffected.
