A small group of residents is gearing up for a fight to preserve Clifton Heights Athletic Fields if rumors that the Upper Darby School District plans to construct a middle school there are true, writes Linda Reilly for the Delaware County News Network.

Among those ready to defend the field on Springfield Road are three borough leaders, including Mayor Joseph Lombardo Jr., Council President Ron Berry, and Vice President Ed Martin.

The issue was brought before the borough council by Sherry Rich, of Chester Avenue.

“I learned we are losing our ball field because Upper Darby School District wants to build a middle school,” said Rich. “I can’t imagine the impact to our town, to our kids. It will be huge.”

According to officials, the district is considering the cost and possible location for a third middle school, but no final decision has been made.

“That land is owned by the school district and will be considered along with any and all feasible sites if the board eventually decides to build another school.” said Dana Spino, Media Services Manager for Upper Darby School District.
